On May 17, 2012, 2:00pm (EST), our very own Bob Vajko will be presenting a webinar on multiplying churches. You can go the Missio Nexus website to register. When you register, you need to include that you are with TEAM, so that there will be no charge.

Twelve Hindrances to Planting and Multipying Churches
Structures exist in mission practice that can become strictures hindering internal dynamic and the spontaneous expansion of the church. What are some of these hindrances that discourage the growth of a local church in quantity and quality as well as the multiplication of that church leading to a movement of multiplication? Twelve of these wrong structures will be dealt with during this webinar.
If you have the ability to talk on the phone and access the Internet at the same time, you have all the technology you need to join a webinar.

One of the privileges of serving in the Centre for Lifelong Learning is that we interview candidates during the placement process, as well as missionaries who come through for their Home Assignment debrief. One question that almost always sneaks in in one form or another is “Tell me about some books you are reading.” As a result, the list of books I want to read usually grows faster than I can read them. Here are some that stood out in a recent conversation with a couple who hope to serve in Asia:

Tragedy in Crimson: How the Dalai Lama Conquered the World but Lost the Battle with China by Tim Johnson

At a recent phasetwo/phasefour, one of our participants, Rachel Davis (heading for ministry in the Middle East), shared with me a couple pages from her notebook that greatly impressed me. I asked where she had gotten the material, and she explained that it came from a two week course she had participated in, called Leadership Matters.

I checked out the website, and found that it is a partnership of organizations who work cross-culturally around the world, called International Training Alliance. They state their mission as:

The International Training Alliance is a committed group of organizations, partnering together to provide Biblically based, skill focussed training aimed at equipping national and expatriate leaders. This training is given around the world by leaders, through the two week Leadership Matters Courses.

Rachel writes:

Here are webpages that describe more about the Leadership Matters Course where I was encouraged to develop a “Life Management Plan.” I think many aspects are very similar to what TEAM already does with the “Day of Prayer and Vision” and the “Growth Plan.” The training is run by a partnership called the “International Training Alliance,” and several key leaders are Wycliffe people.

Leadership Matters courses are taught several times a year, and in locations from Nepal to South Africa, as well as Asia, Latin America, the US and Europe. Dates and costs are available on the website.

Katie Dooley, the Admissions Coordinator at Bethany Center for Graduate Studies, wants to remind us that:

“We have specifically designed our programs for missionaries who are on the field or plan to be on the field soon. We wanted to offer advanced intercultural training without requiring them to leave their current positions in missions or ministry to attend a residential campus. Instead, immediately apply what you are learning to the cross-cultural context you are currently in by pursuing one of our online MA degrees.

Whether you work as a frontline missionary, train and develop the next generation of western or indigenous mission leaders, or minister among the most vulnerable members of society to bring rescue and restoration, we have a program designed to equip you for your next level of ministry effectiveness. Choose from one of our MA degrees:

MA in Intercultural Studies

MA in Intercultural Leadership

MA in Intercultural Education

Since I had recently heard the same blog mentioned in an interview for the CLL, it got my attention. Tim Challies writes a blog that includes book reviews, but also a wide variety of other concepts. Tim is a web-designer and a pastor, an author and a blogger. All of his prolific communication methodologies seem focused on glory to God and encouraging other to do the same.
